The Ontonagon system is one of the UP's largest river complexes. The Middle Branch, West Branch, and East Branch all hold wild brook trout in their upper sections within the Ottawa National Forest. Brown trout are present in accessible lower sections. The main stem receives Lake Superior steelhead beginning in April.

The Ottawa National Forest manages extensive public land throughout the Ontonagon watershed, making access straightforward for anglers willing to navigate forest roads. The remote character of the upper branches means light pressure and wild fishing conditions — exactly what draws anglers to the western UP.
