Thunder Bay River Trout Fishing Conditions
The Thunder Bay River flows through Alpena County to Lake Huron at Alpena, offering brown trout in the upper reaches and Lake Huron steelhead in the lower river. An underutilized stream in northeast Michigan with good public access.
The Thunder Bay is northeast Michigan's primary trout river — a designation that comes partly by default given the region's lack of famous streams and partly because the river genuinely holds quality trout water in its upper reaches near Atlanta. Brown trout and some brook trout in the cold upper sections; steelhead entering from Lake Huron in the lower river near Alpena.
The Thunder Bay River watershed near Atlanta and Herron is good base-camp fishing territory. The surrounding state forest provides public access and a remote character that contrasts with the more tourist-oriented northeast Michigan coast. Anglers from the Alpena area have excellent local access to both upper trout water and lower steelhead reaches.
